Individual Counseling in Ridgeland, MS and Online Across Mississippi
You have carried it quietly long enough
You may be here because handling it on your own stopped working.
Maybe nothing is technically wrong. The job gets done, the bills get paid, people would describe you as fine. And still you are tired in a way that does not lift, short with people you love, or lying awake running through things you cannot change.
Maybe something did happen. A loss, a diagnosis, a divorce, a move, a season that rearranged your life without asking. You have been coping, and coping has started to feel like the whole job.
That is not weakness, and it is not a failure of faith or effort. Most people wait until carrying it alone costs more than asking for help. Reaching that point is not the problem. It is usually the moment the work can start.

Who this helps
Who this is for
Adults at every stage, from young adults figuring out who they are to older adults facing retirement, illness, or loss. People who have never been to counseling, and people who have done therapy before and want to go further this time.
People who can name exactly what is wrong, and people who only know that something is. You do not need a diagnosis, a crisis, or a tidy summary to come in.
For men, our men's counseling page covers how we approach that work. For teens, see teen counseling. For couples, see marriage and couples counseling.
What we work on
What we work on
Anxiety and worry that follow you into every room.
Depression and burnout, when effort is no longer bringing the color back.
Grief and loss, recent or old: people, marriages, health, futures you expected to have.
Trauma that your body still reacts to, even years later.
Life transitions: a new role, a move, an empty nest, divorce, midlife, retirement.
Identity, purpose, and faith questions, when you are not sure who you are anymore or where God fits.
Relationship patterns that keep repeating with different people.
Self-worth, shame, and perfectionism, and the pressure to keep everything together.
Our approach
How Stillwaters approaches individual counseling
- 1
Listening first
Your first sessions are for understanding what brought you in, in your own words, and what else is going on in your life. The plan follows from that picture, not from a script.
- 2
A plan you help build
Together you and your therapist name what you are working on and how you will both know it is helping. You should never have to guess what the work is for.
- 3
Cognitive Behavioral, Dialectical Behavior, and Acceptance & Commitment Therapies
For patterns of thought and avoidance that keep you stuck, with skills you practice between sessions.
- 4
Internal Family Systems
For the parts of you that pull in different directions, like the part that keeps pushing and the part that wants to quit, so you can understand what each one is protecting.
- 5
EMDR, Brainspotting, & TF-CBT
When what you are carrying is rooted in experiences that still hold a charge. Your therapist will assess whether it fits.
- 6
Faith and spiritual integration, if you want it
It is always your call, and you can change your mind.
Not every therapist uses every approach. Tell our intake coordinator what is happening and we will match you with someone whose training fits your situation.
Availability varies by therapist. It depends on which clinician you are matched with and how flexible your availability is. If you need to be seen sooner, say so when you call and we will tell you honestly what is possible.
Why it matters who you see for this
Individual counseling covers a wide range, and that makes fit matter more, not less. Grief, trauma, depression, and a hard transition can look alike from the outside and need very different things from a therapist. A good match starts with someone trained in what you are actually carrying.
It also matters that the work goes somewhere. Feeling heard is necessary, but it is not the whole job. Good counseling is warm and active at the same time. It has a direction, it gives you something to practice, and your therapist checks with you about whether it is working.

What to expect
What to expect

- 1
The first call.
Tell our intake coordinator what is going on in ordinary language. They will ask about scheduling, insurance or self-pay, whether faith or spirituality matters to you, and any preference about your therapist.
- 2
The first session.
Mostly you talking and your therapist asking questions about what is happening now, what led up to it, and what support you already have. By the end you should have a sense of what the work will involve. If you do not, ask.
- 3
The work.
Sessions are usually weekly at the start. You will work on understanding the pattern, practicing something different, and noticing what changes. Some weeks will feel like progress and some will not. Your therapist will check with you about whether it is helping.
- 4
Length.
It depends on what you are working on. A focused concern may need a shorter course of work. Trauma, grief, and long-standing patterns usually take longer. Your therapist should give you a real estimate after intake and should be tracking whether it is working.
