Marriage and Couples Counseling in Ridgeland, MS and Online Across Mississippi

You can stop having the same fight and start understanding it.

Stillwaters Counseling Group provides marriage and couples counseling in Ridgeland, Mississippi, and online for couples located anywhere in the state. Our team includes therapists trained in Gottman Method, including advanced work in affairs and trauma, along with Emotionally Focused Therapy and attachment-based couples work. We help couples facing conflict, disconnection, betrayal, intimacy concerns, and uncertainty about whether the relationship can be repaired.

You may be here because something keeps repeating.

Maybe the argument changes topics but never changes shape. Maybe the house is quiet and that is worse. Maybe trust broke in a way you did not see coming, and you are trying to decide what happens now while still making school lunches and answering work emails.

You may have already tried talking it out at midnight, or reading the book someone recommended, or agreeing to do better and meaning it. It helped for a week. Then the same thing happened again, and it felt like proof of something.

It is not proof. Couples rarely stay stuck because they lack effort or love. They stay stuck because the pattern underneath the argument has never been named, and you cannot change something you cannot see.

Who this helps

Who this is for

Married couples, engaged and unmarried partners, and couples at every stage from newly together to decades in. Couples in crisis and couples who are simply tired of the distance. Partners who are certain they want to stay, partners who are not sure, and partners who disagree about that.

We also work with individuals whose primary concern is their marriage, including situations where one partner is ready for counseling before the other.

Our approach

How Stillwaters approaches couples work

  1. 1

    Gottman Method.

A structured, research-based approach to how couples argue, repair, and stay connected. Therapists on our team have completed Levels 1 and 2, and advanced training in affairs, trauma, and addiction.

  2. 2

    Emotionally Focused Therapy.

Works with the attachment need underneath the conflict, the fear of being alone with something that matters, so that the cycle can slow down enough to interrupt.

  3. 3

    Attachment-based couples therapy.

Looks at how each of you learned to protect yourself in relationships, often long before this one, and how those protections now collide.

  4. 4

    Trauma-informed care and EMDR

, where past injury or betrayal is still driving the present.

  5. 5

    PREPARE/ENRICH and SYMBIS

for premarital and relationship assessment work.

Not every therapist uses every approach. Tell our intake coordinator what is happening and we will match you with someone whose training fits your situation.

Availability varies by therapist. It depends on which clinician you are matched with and how flexible your availability is. If you need to be seen sooner, say so when you call and we will tell you honestly what is possible.

Why the right couples therapist matters here

Couples work is not individual therapy with two people in the room. Managing two people's distress at once, without taking a side and without flattening the conflict into a compromise nobody believes in, is a specific skill.

It matters even more after betrayal. Affair recovery has a sequence to it, and moving too quickly to forgiveness or to problem-solving usually sets the work back. A therapist trained in that sequence knows that the first job is stabilizing, not deciding.

What to expect

What to expect

A counseling room at Stillwaters, with a sofa, two lamps, and tissues on the table.
  1. 1

    The first call.

Tell our intake coordinator what is happening in ordinary language. You do not need a diagnosis or a tidy summary. They will ask about scheduling, insurance or self-pay, whether faith or spirituality matters to you, and any preference about your therapist.

  2. 2

    The first session.

Both partners usually attend. Your therapist will listen to how each of you understands what is happening, ask about history, and begin naming the pattern rather than assigning fault. Some therapists follow the first joint session with an individual session for each partner.

  3. 3

    The work.

Sessions are active. You will practice slowing conflict down, saying the thing underneath the complaint, and repairing after a rupture rather than avoiding the next one. Your therapist will check with you about whether it is helping.

Some couples do focused, shorter-term work. Betrayal, longstanding patterns, and trauma usually take longer, because you are rebuilding something rather than solving something.

Common questions

Yes. Individual work on a marriage is real work, and it is often where things start. One person changing how they respond changes the pattern, even before the other person is in the room. Your therapist will also be honest with you about what individual work can and cannot accomplish here.

You do not have to figure out which therapist is right for you.

Tell us what is going on and we will match you with someone whose training and style fit your situation.
