EMDR and Trauma Therapy in Ridgeland, MS and Online Across Mississippi
Your body remembers something your life has moved past.
You may be here because you are managing something that will not stay managed.
Maybe you startle at nothing. Maybe you go somewhere else in the middle of a conversation and come back not knowing how long you were gone. Maybe you can describe what happened calmly, in order, and still cannot sleep.
Maybe you have done therapy before and understand your history well. You can explain exactly why you react the way you do, and the explanation has not changed the reaction.
That gap between knowing and feeling is not a personal failure. Trauma is stored differently from ordinary memory. Insight alone often does not reach it, which is why understanding your childhood has not been enough to stop your chest from tightening when someone raises their voice.

Who this helps
Who this is for
Adults carrying childhood trauma, abuse, neglect, or family-of-origin wounds. People with PTSD, panic, or intrusive memories after a specific event. Partners recovering from betrayal. Clients dealing with medical trauma, first responder stress, or sudden loss. Teens and children, with developmentally appropriate approaches.
It is also for people who would not use the word trauma about themselves. You do not need a diagnosis or a story you consider bad enough. If something still has a grip on you, that is enough reason to come in.
Our approach
How Stillwaters approaches trauma
- 1
Stabilization first.
Before processing anything, the work is building enough regulation and safety that revisiting a memory does not simply flood you. Skipping this step is the most common way trauma therapy goes badly.
- 2
EMDR.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing uses bilateral stimulation while you hold a target memory, allowing it to be reprocessed so it loses its charge. You do not have to narrate the event in detail. Therapists on our team are EMDR trained, including advanced applications and intensive formats.
- 3
Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
A structured approach for children and adolescents, usually including caregivers.
- 4
Brainspotting.
Uses fixed eye position to access where trauma is held somatically, often useful when talking has stalled.
- 5
Cognitive Processing Therapy.
Works with the beliefs trauma installed about safety, trust, control, and self-worth.
- 6
Attachment-based work
, for trauma that shows up in how you relate to people now.
Availability varies by therapist. It depends on which clinician you are matched with and how flexible your availability is. If you need to be seen sooner, say so when you call and we will tell you honestly what is possible.
Why specialized trauma care matters
Trauma therapy done in the wrong order can make things worse. Processing before stabilization can leave someone more dysregulated than when they started. Pushing for detail too early can retraumatize.
A trauma-trained therapist watches your nervous system in the room, not just your narrative. They will slow down when you need slowing down, and they will tell you when they think you are ready rather than assuming.
EMDR is also not right for everyone or for every stage. A good EMDR therapist will assess fit rather than starting protocol in session two because that is what you asked for.

What to expect
What to expect

- 1
The first call.
Tell us what is happening now. You do not have to tell the story to the intake coordinator, and you should not have to tell it more than once.
- 2
The first sessions.
History, current symptoms, what supports you already have, and what makes things worse. Your therapist will explain how trauma affects the nervous system and start building regulation skills. This phase is the work, not the waiting room before the work.
- 3
Processing.
When you are ready, and only then. Your therapist will explain what EMDR or another approach involves before you begin, and you stay in control of pacing throughout.
- 4
Length.
A single-incident trauma may resolve in a shorter, focused course. Childhood and complex trauma take longer. Your therapist should give you a real assessment after intake and should be checking whether it is working.
