Family Counseling in Ridgeland, MS and Online Across Mississippi

Your family can learn to repair what keeps breaking.

Stillwaters Counseling Group provides family counseling in Ridgeland, Mississippi, and online for families located anywhere in the state. We work with parents and children, teens, step-parents, adult children, and aging parents through communication breakdowns, blended family strain, divorce and co-parenting, and loss. Our clinicians use family systems approaches to map the pattern, slow it down, and build ways to repair.

You may be here because the same fight keeps winning.

It starts over dishes or curfew or a tone of voice, and twenty minutes later everyone is in a different room. Someone always ends up the bad guy. Someone always goes quiet. You love each other, and you are tired.

Maybe something changed the shape of your family: a divorce, a remarriage, a death, a move, a diagnosis. Everyone is adjusting at a different speed, and it is coming out sideways.

That is not proof your family is broken. Families get stuck in patterns that nobody chose and nobody can see from inside. Once the pattern has a name, it can change.

Who this helps

Who this is for

Parents and children, parents and teens, siblings, step-families, and adult children with aging parents. Families who all want to come, and families where one person is not ready yet.

Foster and adoptive families, with therapists who have training in that work.

You do not need everyone in the room, or everyone in agreement, to start.

What we work on

What we work on

Communication that keeps breaking down, when every conversation becomes the same argument.

Parent-teen disconnect, when a teen has gone quiet or stopped letting you in.

Blended and step-families, with loyalty conflicts and the slow work of becoming a new family.

Divorce and co-parenting, keeping kids steady while the adults' relationship changes.

Grief and major loss that has rearranged who does what.

Adult children and aging parents, including caregiving strain, estrangement, and old wounds.

Foster and adoptive transitions, and the attachment questions that come with them.

Our approach

How Stillwaters approaches family counseling

  1. 1

    Map the system.

Your therapist starts by understanding who plays what role, where things get stuck, and what your family has already tried.

  2. 2

    Family systems work

looks at how each person's response feeds the next one, so the pattern can be interrupted instead of blamed on one person.

  3. 3

    Slow the pattern down.

You will name the cycle out loud and practice interrupting it in session, so it can be interrupted at home.

  4. 4

    Build repair skills.

Every family ruptures. Healthy ones repair. You will learn the language and the moves that make repair possible.

  5. 5

The right people in the room.

Some sessions include everyone. Some are parents only, siblings, or one parent and one child. Your therapist will design that around your goals.

Not every therapist uses every approach. Tell our intake coordinator what is happening and we will match you with someone whose training fits your situation.

Availability varies by therapist. It depends on which clinician you are matched with and how flexible your availability is. If you need to be seen sooner, say so when you call and we will tell you honestly what is possible.

Why it matters who you see for this

Family sessions can get loud fast, and a therapist who is not trained to hold the room can end up refereeing or taking a side. A family therapist keeps everyone safe enough to keep talking, gives each person a fair hearing, and translates what people mean underneath what they say.

It also matters that the therapist sees the whole system. The child who is acting out is often carrying stress that belongs to the whole family. Treating only that child usually misses it.

What to expect

What to expect

A counseling room at Stillwaters, with a sofa, two lamps, and tissues on the table.
  1. 1

    The first call.

Tell our intake coordinator who is in the family, what is happening, and who is willing to come.

  2. 2

    The first session.

Usually the parents or the adults who called, so your therapist can understand the situation before the rest of the family joins.

  3. 3

    The work.

A mix of whole-family and smaller sessions, with things to practice at home in between.

  4. 4

    Length.

It depends on what you are working on. Blended families, post-divorce work, and foster or adoptive transitions usually take longer. Your therapist should give you a real estimate after intake.
